Azrael is 6'3" and about 165 lbs, lean but muscular. His hair is blonde, cut short, and he is usually clean-shaven. He has a pale, clear complexion, with baby blue eyes that led him to be compared to an angel when he was younger. Azrael still possesses a smile that lights up his face - everything from a disarming grin to a smirk - and expressive eyebrows.

He looks very much the part of a charming, clean-cut, All-American boy, and still retains his impeccable hygeine. Back in the days where that kind of thing was available, Azrael used to wear some pretty flashy clothes, but has lately opted for a more subdued look, for practicality's sake and in order to not draw too much attention to himself when out and about. Besides, silk shirts and the like don't provide much warmth in Wyoming's winters. That's not to say that he dresses like a bum now; he can usually be found in jeans or khakis with a nice button-down shirt and a leather jacket.

defining scars/marks: Missing his right little finger up to the first knuckle, thanks to an episode during the restoration of the power grid.

played-by: Ryan Gosling

p e r s o n a l i t y
strengths: Intelligence, logic, an excellent memory, charisma, perfectionism, perseverance, fierce loyalty to a chosen few, knows when to cry 'halt', willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals
weaknesses: Manipulative and scheming, spoiled, proud, elitist, condescending, loose morals, prone to extreme manic episodes, indulgent when it comes to Ace, Danni, and especially Slick

in detail:
People would generally think that the leader of an aggressive tribe such as the Mountain Lions would be much different than he actually is, and Azrael likes it that way. Keeps up the mystery, which is part of the allure of the job of being the most powerful man in the city. In fact, Azrael is very intelligent, cultured, and calculating. It is largely thanks to his compulsive need to plan everything out that the Mountain Lions have survived this long, and been this successful. For a boy who hadn't had a responsibility in his life before the virus, he takes care of those in his tribe very well, and truly cares what happens to them. That said, the Mountain Lions are not an orphanage, nor are they a charity. Each person he decides to take in serves a purpose which they are expected to fulfill. However, Azrael is used to ample leisure time, and doesn't begrudge his followers the same every once in a while.

Azrael is definitely more level-headed than his second-in-command, and often has to keep Ace from doing something rash and counterproductive which, coupled with his natural leadership skills, is why he's number one. That's not to say he's not spoiled and power-hungry. He also has a very morbid, twisted sense of humor (from which was conceived his chosen name) and he takes great pleasure in life's little ironies. His normal cool rationality is tempered by occasional bouts of mania, during which he is at his most cruel and sadistic. Azrael probably suffers from some sort of mood disorder, but was never diagnosed. Despite that, the majority of the "atrocities" the Mountain Lions have committed have been sanctioned by Azrael when he's of sound mind; they have been carefully planned and he believes them to be a necessity when establishing authority.

He has a very wide range of knowledge, and would rather spend his time reading than controlling the city, but one does what one must. Azrael is prone to quoting literature or making random and sometimes nonsensical associations in his mind. He has miles of untapped potential, but isn't especially motivated to figure out what else he's capable of doing. He is also fairly detached from anyone who isn't one of his three close friends, freeing his personality up for plenty of speculation by everyone else.

Jesse Fraser was born into a life of the sort of privilege and prestige of which most people can only dream. He never was exactly sure what his parents did, nor did he care, as long as his exploits continued to be funded. They were largely absent figures in his life up until their deaths. Jesse was born in Seattle, but moved to Sundance before he can remember, and was raised by a succession of nannies, who would all describe him as a charming but odd little boy. A little angel, until he opened his mouth to inform you that whatever business you were going about was being done absolutely wrong.

He was incredibly intelligent, gifted with an excellent, almost eidetic memory and an inherent condescension that drove his teachers and classmates alike absolutely insane. He met Nell Sunders (later known as "Slick") in preschool, and the two of them were inseparable, their own private twosome up until first grade, when Jesse was sent to the principal's office on the first day of school for being the annoyingly precocious, smart-alecky little shit that he was, and met Tyler Vance and Danielle Mathers. The twosome became a foursome, with Tyler and Nell as the troublemakers, Jesse more sensible and reserved, but often easily persuaded into mischief, and Danni as the sweetheart. Their little group's dynamic worked for them, and they continued in that fashion all throughout grade school.

A cast of characters entered and exited the lives of the elite quartet, but few made a lasting impression. They all dated and had other friends, yet none of their other relationships tended to last long. Jesse was bored with what passed for high society life in Sundance - the parties were tedious, the girls vapid and uninteresting. The group of them knotted together at such functions, more often than not, joined by an extra member. Johnnie Jackson was an old friend of Tyler's, but you would hardly know it by the way he picked on her. Jesse was polite enough, but fairly indifferent toward her for years, until one day, he wasn't indifferent anymore. Unsure of how to react, he put off mentioning it until it was too late and she was sleeping with his best friend. Awkward.

Jesse graduated as valedictorian of his high school's class of 2017, and his father made a rare appearance around that time to give him a vastly affectionate (for him) pat on the back and to ask him what he was going to do with his life. There was nothing in particular that came to mind, so he chose the course of action that was expected of him: Cornell University, pre-med. He was poised to dive into a future of textbooks and pretentious Ivy-Leaguers when Tyler presented him with a much more appealing alternative. It didn't take much convincing on Tyler's part to get Jesse to agree to a round-the-world adventure, all expenses paid by the Vance empire, and the teenagers embarked without a backward glance. Cornell would still be there in a year, or so Jesse thought. Regardless, the boys had a few carefree months of parties and girls and reckless behavior...until the virus struck.

Tyler's grandmother was the first of Jesse's acquaintances to die. His own parents also had received the virus in its earliest form, and therefore followed not long after. Call him callous, but Jesse didn't really care; he rarely saw them, anyway. As more and more adults began to die in Sundance and the world at large, it became clear to both Tyler and Jesse that they were going to have to actually do something in order to secure their futures. So their parents, generally useless to them in life, provided their sons with the keys to the city in their death: the power plant and lodge, formerly owned by the Frasers, and the Vances' copper mines. Jesse and Tyler were soon reunited with Nell and Danni, and they banded together as each others' family, as they always had been. They soon recognized that they had a distinct advantage over the rest of the survivors, who were left with nothing, and began to exercise their power over the remaining inhabitants of the city, taking in old acquaintances or people who could be useful to them.

Jesse had to do a lot of growing up, in the last days of the virus and the early days of the new way of life. As perhaps the most mature of the original four Mountain Lions, he quickly and naturally adopted the role of leader and none of his friends seemed to have a problem with it. However, he had to actually learn the value of work, and still doesn't like it much, but it's a necessary evil. In the absence of any doctors, he deigned to put what medical skills he had acquired through his reading to use in the beginning, and still does, when there's nobody else to do it. He really wouldn't have made a bad doctor, had he actually gone through with med school. Apparently, it's all about circumstances, and these happened to awaken abilities that Jesse probably would never have known he had, going to Cornell and living off his parents' money his whole life.

It was around this time that Jesse Fraser became Azrael, mysterious and ruthless leader of the Mountain Lions. He chose his name, an allusion to Islamic mysticism and evidence of his macabre sense of humor, because of the fear that was quickly becoming associated with him and his tribe. His reputation was fabricated by people who don't know him, and few people do, not even his own tribe members. He generally allows his Cabinet (Tyler, now styling himself Ace of Spades, Nell, better known as Slick, and Danni) to carry out most of what needs to be done from day to day, but all major decisions are deferred to Azrael, and he keeps the peace within the tribe while disturbing it elsewhere - usually out of necessity, sometimes just because he's bored.
