p e r s o n a l i t y
strengths: Brave, daring, spontaneous, free-spirited, agile, charming, a good storyteller (when he's feeling talkative), a killer right hook
weaknesses: Harsh temper, reckless, moody, mistrustful, cocky, manipulative, attention deficit, undisciplined, a loose cannon

in detail:
Shai's personality is a study in extremes. He can go from broody to playful and vice versa in seconds. One day an event will devastate him, the next he'll be able to laugh at it, sometimes cocky, sometimes insecure. His rages are fierce, and somebody usually gets punched when he experiences one. At a different time, he'll be serene or just apathetic. It's hard to predict his moods.

He has the emotional and physical resilience that comes with his youth. Shai is used to having to take care of himself. Reassurance is appreciated but not needed - in fact, he's used to harsh words before encouraging ones, when it comes to adults. He is mistrustful of most people, but especially people who are significantly older than he is. Shai will bend to authority as far as it gets him fed, but he's a trickster and has a smart mouth, along with fists as quick as his feet. Though less of a troublemaker than he once was, trouble usually still follows him around, due largely to his recklessness and inability to deal with boredom. When he's bored, he'll make something interesting happen - simple as that.

His relationships with others depend entirely on what they are to him, or maybe what they can give him. He's usually friendly enough, though he can be annoying about it. If he's in the right mood, he can butter someone up enough to get what he wants. If not, he can always just try to beat it out of them, though he's realizing that the former is usually more effective, and rarely gets into physical fights anymore.

Anastacia Vassio only married once, but throughout the course of her short life, had children by three men. She lost her first child, a girl, and the father left her. She was seventeen. Two years later, she had a new man and a new baby - a boy that she named Shai. That man didn't last long either, though, and Anastacia was left to single parenthood for the next year and a half, until she met and married Arthur Felix. Arthur was good to her, though he was a strict man by nature, and both she and her son took his last name. She had his baby when Shai was four, another girl named Elysia.

Shai had always known that Arthur wasn't his father - he was colored like his mother but darker, not lighter like his half-sister. If that didn't make it obvious enough, Arthur never seemed to like Shai, and Shai returned the sentiment, though he was the only father he'd ever known. His step-father was an authoritarian ass, his sister a spoiled brat, and he got the feeling that his mother regretted his existence, when she could've had what she had now, without a reminder of her unpleasant history with men. So, Shai acted up. He became angry, and got into fights at school, and then got into fights at home when his parents heard about them. Punishments stopped working; counseling had never worked in the first place. Shai found himself perpetually grounded, in detention every afternoon, but he found ways to do what he wanted, anyway. He ran away from home seven times during middle school, and the police were involved in several of the fights he found himself in. By high school, not a lot had changed. He still fought with everybody, and his parents were at their wits' end. Shai stole from them, trying to get enough money to make a successful escape attempt, but he was arrested while trying to steal a car before he got the chance.

They sent him away, to a youth detention center. That's what the counselors called it; everybody else called it juvie. Shai had become too much for anybody to handle. He was sent there when he was fourteen, and in a suddenly much more restricted environment, calmed down a bit, though he got into a few more fights in the beginning. There was no real point to them anymore, though. His mother and step-father came to visit once every couple of months, but he never looked forward to their visits. They didn't seem to miss him much. So he settled back to wait until the day he turned eighteen or deemed reformed and released, whichever came first.

He'd lived the routine of the incarcerated for almost a year, when the reports came in of an epidemic. It didn't take long to reach a juvenile hall in northeastern Nevada, nor did it take long to decimate its population. Shai and a fellow inmate named Greg seized the opportunity, slipping out toward freedom while the rest lay dying. They hotwired a car, and drove as far as it would take them, seeking shelter and stealing from empty homes and abandoned shops. When the car died, they walked until they found another one they could take. Both of them were untouched by the disease, wandering aimlessly through Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado for months.

Of course, just because they were both healthy didn't mean they were safe from danger. There were more run-ins with the Eaters than either of the teenagers would've liked, but they were young and fast, and managed to keep themselves alive. That is, until one altercation while looking for food in Denver that found Greg too slow. Shai heard him fall behind, but couldn't afford to stop and check on his friend. He thought he was done for when he tore down a street at full speed and found his escape route blocked by a high wall...one with guards on it. Healthy, human guards. He all but ran into it, yelling at the top of his lungs to catch their attention. His timely admission into Haven saved his life. In all his wanderings as a scout for the community since then, he still hasn't found any clues as to what happened to Greg, though he can guess.
