height: 6'0"
weight: 155 lbs.
eye color: Brown
hair color: Auburn
demeanor: He's not exactly shy, but Vyson is definitely withdrawn, and usually quiet. He's always preferred not to be the center of attention. Sometimes it seems like he's distracted or his mind is somewhere else, which means he's probably listening in on the thoughts of the room.
manner of speech: He's a mutterer. Vyson is more likely to be delivering dry remarks under his breath than giving any speeches. His accent isn't particularly pronounced, but he fits right in in New York.

distinguishing features: A lot of scars from a childhood spent getting beat up, and a barcode tattoo at the back of his neck - a souvenir of his captivity at Operation X.
wardrobe: Perpetually casual. Jeans, t-shirts, sneakers.

Never having been particularly intimidating physically, Vyson does have a rather daunting intelligence. He's very smart, and pretty witty, if he does say so himself. He's still a bookworm at heart, very much into history and literature. As a kid, he was pretty shy and geeky and awkward, and he can't say with complete honesty that he's entirely grown out of that, though he has learned to stick up for himself more often. He's got a manner of speech that makes him seem condescending sometimes, and his native tongue is sarcasm, which often rubs people the wrong way. He's frequently surly, easily agitated and frustrated, and dislikes people in general. However, he does know how to make people like him, if there's something in it for him. It's not hard to push people's buttons when you can hear their thoughts.

Perhaps more than any of his siblings, Vyson's personality has been greatly shaped by his powers. There are days when his telepathy is harder to control than others, though at twenty-three, he's got a pretty good grasp on them. On a bad day, he'll be moodier than usual, and was a very angry teenager. Hey, you try hearing every negative thought the people around you have, hearing their dirtiest secrets and being acutely aware of their flaws - see if you're sunshine and rainbows. As a result of this, he's pretty cynical, and was severely withdrawn for a while. During the few sessions with a shrink when he was a teen, she suggested pets to take him one step closer to connecting with the world around him. It was the only good advice she gave him, and Vyson has kept pets ever since; he just likes animals better than humans.

People, he can take or leave. At least, that's what he'd like to believe. Vyson did pick up a few tricks from his family, when it comes to getting what he wants. He's not above warping the truth, feeding people what they want to hear to suit his needs, giving just the right compliment to get a girl into bed with him...that sort of thing. Manipulation isn't too hard; he's got a good poker face, is generally good at hiding the fact that he reads people's minds. Despite his valiant efforts to keep his distance from people - especially his siblings - telepathy goes both ways: he hears the good along with the bad, and it's just as hard to ignore. Thus, it's impossible for him to completely isolate himself, and he's rejoined the world since high school, though he tries not to get too involved.

Vyson Lawrence was the fourth son born into the Abbott brood, and if you ask him, he got the short end of the stick. What kind of stupid name was Vyson anyway? He could only assume that his mother had been drugged up some kind of awesome when that decision was made. And the indignities didn't stop there. Vys got all of his brothers' hand-me-downs, and got picked on by all of them as the youngest and runtiest. He was never as athletic or popular as Vince, Vance, or Vaughn, and that was bad enough, but it was made even worse by the fact that manipulation and sneakiness seemed to be a family tradition. And just as the cherry on top, they were all mutants - all five kids.

So Vyson grew up the brunt of every prank, joke, and insult in the book, and quite a few that weren't - the Abbotts weren't much for doing things by the book. Vyson was no exception, though he went about it differently than his siblings. He got good grades in school, and was good at reading and writing, but didn't seem to have anywhere he wanted to go with his talents. Vyson preferred to stay on the sidelines with his nose in a book or in his room immersed in some video game than actually interact with people. He withdrew from the world significantly in his teenage years, due partially to his personality, but also largely thanks to his mutation. Telepathy wasn't the easiest thing to grow up with - far from it, actually. Vyson had a lot of issues controlling it. As a child, it scared him; it was difficult to block the voices out. As a teen, it made him frustrated and angry, and he pulled away from everyone quite a bit. He underwent a brief stint in therapy - it lasted all of about a month, before he informed his parents he was never going back - but ultimately, the best medicine was time and practice. He grew out of the phase after a few years as he became more comfortable with his powers, but he has always been and remains fairly introverted.

He loosened up a bit during college, having some fun while still managing to get good grades. He was still more interested in reading and gaming than going to parties, but there were some laughs, some girls, and good times to be had. Of course, when it was over, he had no idea what to do with the history degree he'd spent four years getting. He supposed the only thing to do was get a job and his own place, which he did. Vyson works at a bookstore in Sector Zero, and lives by himself in an apartment nearby. Well, he's the only human that lives there. He has a tank of fish, a parakeet named Bugs, and a bearded dragon named Josephine to keep him company.

Because he is an Abbott, the issue of petty crime must be addressed: other than cheating on a midterm or three in college (he maintains that Anatomy & Physiology was a pointless class for him to take anyway), the closest Vyson comes to criminal activity is scamming poker. He usually works alone - it's not hard to do, with his powers, and it gets him extra cash when he needs it. Of course, he can't do it too often without getting caught, so when he goes, he goes big. This has led him to acquire a few enemies around the city, having pocketed large sums of their money, but he usually manages to escape unscathed before anybody figures out what he's up to. Usually.

Telepathy.

The ability to mentally control any function the brain controls, hear other people's thoughts, scan the memory of other people and send thoughts directly to others' minds. Vyson also "senses" emotion according to the tone of the thoughts he hears. Theoretically, he can alter things like sensory perception, restrict mental capabilities and functions, and damage the minds of those who attempt to intrude into his, but he's never had much reason to practice this. Beyond actually reading thoughts and memories and learning to block them out, the only other trick he's taught himself proficiency in is a sort of mental 'push', wherein he plants an idea in someone's head. They are not compelled by Vyson to believe this idea or act on it, but people tend to do so of their own will, unaware that it didn't originate in their own minds - more of a 'suggestion' than outright persuasion.

birthplace: Manhattan, New York City, New York

family: Valarie & Victor Abbott have always been good enough to Vyson, he supposes. He never wanted for affection from either of them, at any rate, though during his teen years he blamed them for everything wrong with his life, as teenagers are wont to do. He doesn't have a very close relationship with either of them, having always kept them at a distance, but he talks to them just often enough to keep them off his case.

Vincent Abbott (28) was the brother Vyson always wanted to be like. Sure, he had things going for him that Vince didn't, and the twins were (from young Vys's point of view) also unattainably cool, but every nerdy little boy looks up to his athletic older brother, don't they? Now that they're both grown, they're on more of an even footing, and Vince is the brother Vys trusts the most.

Vaughn Abbott (25), the elder of Vyson's identical twin brothers, wasn't Vys's only tormentor growing up, but was the primary one, more often than not. Vaughn's eased up precious little on him in more recent years and still always seems to drag Vys into whatever trouble he's in whenever they talk, but they share a love of history, if nothing else. Despite their constant headbutting, Vys knows that Vaughn's always got his back when he's in a scrape, and vice versa.

Vance Abbott (25) is the younger of the twins - the supposed "good" one, though Vyson knows better. The twins had each other as partners-in-crime growing up, and had no need for a tagalong little brother - but a victim, that role Vyson could fill. Vyson has always envied the relationship the twins have just a little bit, but he doesn't doubt that Vance cares about him.

Virginia Abbott (19) is Vyson's only sister, and the only Abbott younger than he is. She's also another one that seems to bring trouble wherever she goes, and Vyson tries to stay out of trouble - doesn't always succeed, but tries. Just like all of his brothers, he'd jump to arms if anyone ever threatened her, but they never seemed to have a lot in common as kids, and therefore were never really close growing up. Nowadays, they keep up with each others' lives without getting overly involved.
